Now my mom wants to take my Cadillac because “it’s unreliable and I’m tired of it breaking” so she wants to pay for a lease for me of her choice until I graduate this summer, when I'm gonna have to start paying for it. I don't get to choose the car. And it's looking like I'm not allowed to keep my Cadillac.

Toyota has been leasing the TC super cheap lately. Not sure what, if any, input you can have but that’s something to consider. You can also get the Corolla with a stick now if you’re inclined to such things.

Can you work on it yourself, promise to keep it on the road? Or is it that dire?

its a northstar, right? has it blown the head gaskets yet? has the starter give it up? is it leaking out the valve covers and oil pan yet?

brand new, they were great cars. 12+ years out, not so much.

take the new car and run. you can always get another sofa.

My dad has had this BMW z3 for years, and I’ve always loved it... it’s kind of the car that got me into cars. We always had an understanding that I’d buy it off him when I graduated and he’d get something roomier.

But a couple of months ago, it started having some routine maintenance problems and my parents decided that they needed to go ahead and trade it in. I appealed, but they said I needed something reliable and that I should just go out and buy a “responsible car with practicality and decent gas milage” like a good little young professional. So I told them if they didn’t sell it to me, I’d buy it from the dealership because I wanted that car.

It worked, and now the Z3 is mine, albeit locked up in a garage at home while I’m in my final semester at school. Just find a way to strong arm your mom. Let her know you’re an adult, and you can make decisions for yourself and blow your money any way you please.

definiteley agree that you should pick what you want to drive. whether its a tired unreliable cadillac, or a z3 thats about to run into all its high dollar maintenance. sometimes you have to take a step back and look at things from an unbiased reasonable perspective............er sometimes

That’s awful. My mom tried to get me to get a responsible car, but she knows I have similar tates to her and I got her to change my budget from 50K miles or lower and $15K cap to a $20k cap and bought my 06 GTO cause 20ish MPG and a car I can easily service because it is GM convinced her enough. Now I have an interesting car with a V8, manual, and 4 seats with 2 doors. I say just convince her her choice in car isn’t right if she isn’t paying for all of it. Otherwise its your car and yo need to have a say in it.

do your best to not sign on to that detail.

First off a lease in your situation means you don’t own the car when you’re done with paying on it.

second if you’re paying it who says you can afford that once you graduate?

This isn’t a good plan for anyone.

^this is my point.

I’m trying to move out ASAP after graduation. I don't want to pay rent and a car payment and not be able to afford a car when my lease is up.

“Mom, I really, really appreciate that you are paying for my wheels while I’m in school. If we’re going to go the route of a new car lease, and I’m going to take over payments at graduation, I’d like to have some input on what it is. You know I’m a car guy, after all. Thanks, mom!”

22. Which is why it’s fucking ridiculous for my mom to pay for 1/3rd of a 3 year lease for me when she can just loan me money to fix a CV joint until I get payed.

Nah. “Mom, I’d really appreciate it if you’d loan me $250 until I start my job in half a month to fix my car, as opposed to spending stupid money to lease me a car I don’t even want.”

You should be pretty pissed that your mom is trying to force you into two years of car payments needlessly. That’s what you should be pissed about. Is the Caddy in your name? I dont see how they can “take it away from you”.

That IS what I'm pissed about. And the cars in my name, but on her insurance. She can just drop it if I refuse to get rid of it.

Don’t co-sign the lease and save money the whole year she’s paying for it.

drop the car and the keys off when you graduate and say “enjoy your lease - i’m out” but your own car at this point.

Or remind her you’re an adult and that’s a poor financial decision that you aren’t going to take part in.

Then get your own insurance. Liability isn’t THAT terrible for a 22 year old. That’s a far better option than taking on two years of payments that gets you NOTHING at the end of it.. Full coverage obviously would be the best thing, but IDK what your financial/job situation is like. Besides, it’s only till this summer. You can manage.

Oh and if your parents have given you any financial advice up to this point in your life, you should probably ignore it.

Well, get a part-time job folding shirts at Old Navy or something. I hate to be that guy , but I worked 38 hours/week when I was in college and I’m a cupcake. So I think you can do it. Especially since you’ve only got a few months left of school. Seriously, it’s way easier than you think.

$10/hour (which gives you $7.50/hr takehome after tax) means you have to work about 34 hours a month. That’s 8 hours a week to cover rent. I think you can manage that plus school.

Believe me, you’ll be glad you did. That lease crap is only going to hold you down for two years and when it’s over, you’ll have nothing to show for it.
